Preakness and the state of racing in Maryland

Check out Evan Weiner's post about Preakness and the state of Maryland horse racing. I was planning to write a state of the Preakness post this week, but I would never be able to compete with Evan.

Another good read this weekend is the article about Calvin Borel on the front page of the New York Times. He's another overnight success that took 30 years to get there.

The race canceled was the Pimlico Special, not, as the story said, the $500,000 Preakness Special.
The drumbeat for slot machines does not address racing's fundamental ills, and outside commentators -- and, indeed, some on the inside -- fall back on it too easily.
