A Look inside the mind of John Scheinman

Turf Writer, and occasional commenter on this site, John Scheinman has a very interesting video posted here on YouTube. John runs around Pimlico on a Friday afternoon and gives us a behind the scenes look at the inspiration for his writting. I really enjoyed seeing track handicapper Frank Carulli yelling on the phone. John is doing a good job of being funny, but points out so many sad things about Maryland racing. Check out the video, it makes you laugh, and as a racing fan, cry!

This is great guys, thanks for finding it -- I've always enjoyed reading Scheinman... I cross posted this on my blog too.

yeah, that's great. he points out all the unfortunate stuff, but it's still a joy. this is a great example of "there's no such thing as bad press." plus, it's the experience that most of us embrace. sure we love saratoga and del mar and big race days with a ton of fans, but i like the friday afternoon with just the regulars better, really. good stuff.

Great stuff. . .much more amusing then some of the stuff that passes for humor on ESPN/NBC and ABC. Maybe Johnny S can get himself a network job after this.

I have to be honest - before seeing this, I never really knew what a track was supposed to look like, beyond what you see on TV (I've never been to a race, sadly).

But this video made my opinion of Presque Isle Down go down ... WAY down. What I'm assuming is the grandstand at Pimlico is the 1st/2nd floor (not sure which one ... one of them is the buffet) of the casino there, and there isn't a nice balcony-type thing... you're forced to watch through glass. I'm not entirely sure that what I saw there was the paddock, but if it is, I think it would qualify as the worst...

Let's just say that it's extremely obvious that the track at PI is an afterthought, tacked on to the casino. Which shouldn't surprise me, but the way they're hyping the $500,000 purses in September, you think they'd have thought about the design a little bit...

If that's a look inside my mind, I must be losing it. -- J.S.
